C’era una volta, tanto tempo fa, una bella ragazza di nome Cenerentola.
Cenerentola aveva lunghi capelli rossi, gli occhi verdi e lentiggini sparse su tutto il naso. Era sveglia e buona e adorava raccontare le barzellette.
There was once, a long time ago, a beautiful girl named Cinderella.
Cinderella had long red hair, green eyes, and freckles scattered all over her nose. She was clever and kind, and she adored telling jokes.
Ma era molto infelice. Il padre e la madre erano morti e Cenerentola viveva con la sua matrigna e due sorellastre. Anche se abitavano in una grande casa, erano in realtà molto poveri. Avevano quasi finito i loro risparmi.
But she was very unhappy. Her father and mother had died, and Cinderella lived with her stepmother and two stepsisters. Although they lived in a big house, in reality they were very poor. Their money was nearly gone. (Literally: They had almost finished their savings.)
La matrigna voleva far sposare una delle sue figlie con un uomo ricco così da non essere più in povertà. Ma le sorellastre di Cenerentola non erano carine quanto lei, né buone quanto lei e né divertenti quanto lei.
The stepmother wanted to marry one of her daughters to (with) a rich man so they would no longer be poor. But Cinderella's stepsisters were not as pretty as her, not as kind as her, and not as funny as her.
Gli uomini che andavano a far visita alla famiglia si innamoravano tutti subito di Cenerentola e non degnavano le sorellastre nemmeno di uno sguardo. La cosa infastidiva molto la matrigna che allora costringeva Cenerentola a fare tutte le faccende.
The men who went to visit the family all immediately fell in love with Cinderella, and did not give the sisters even one look. This frustrated the stepmother a lot, so she forced Cinderella to do all the chores.
“Spazza il corridoio!” ordinava la matrigna.
“Pulisci la cucina!”
“Prepara la cena!”
“Pulisci le nostre stanze!”
“Dai lo straccio in bagno!”
“Pulisci le finestre!”
“Svelta! Muoviti!”
"Sweep the hallway!" ordered the stepmother.
"Clean the kitchen!"
"Prepare our dinner!"
"Clean our bedrooms!"
"Mop (give the mop in) the bathroom!"
"Clean the windows!"
"Quick! Hurry! (Move yourself!)"
La matrigna ce la metteva tutta a rendere Cenerentola infelice. Le sorellastre avevano vestiti e scarpe bellissimi, ma il vestito di Cenerentola era fatto di stracci.
The stepmother tried hard to make (put everything into making) Cinderella unhappy. The stepsisters had beautiful dresses and shoes, but Cinderella's dress was made of old rags.
Le sorellastre mangiavano sempre cibi prelibati, ma Cenerentola mangiava sempre gli avanzi. E le sorellastre dormivano in letti comodi nelle loro stanze, ma Cenerentola dormiva su un letto di paglia sul pavimento della cucina.
The stepsisters always ate delicious foods, but Cinderella always ate leftovers. And the stepsisters slept in their comfortable beds in their bedrooms, but Cinderella slept on a bed of straw on the floor of the kitchen.
Gli animali erano gli unici amici di Cenerentola. La sera stava seduta accanto al fuoco in cucina e raccontava barzellette alla famiglia di topolini che abitava nel muro. Parlava con il gatto.
The animals were Cinderella's only friends. In the evening she sat beside the fireplace in the kitchen and told jokes to the family of mice who lived in the wall. She talked to the cat.
“Le cose andranno meglio in futuro…” diceva al gatto.
“Miao…” rispondeva il gatto.
"Things will get better one day... (will go better in future...)" she said to the cat.
"Meow…" the cat replied.
Un giorno, mentre Cenerentola era nell’orto a raccogliere le zucche, arrivò una lettera. Era un invito al ballo d’estate del re. La matrigna e le sorellastre di Cenerentola erano molto emozionate.
One day, while Cinderella was in the vegetable garden picking pumpkins, a letter arrived. It was an invitation to the king's summer ball. Cinderella's stepmother and stepsisters were very excited.
“Ci sarà il principe!”
“È così affascinante!”
“È così ricco!”
“Gli serve una moglie...”
"The prince will be there!"
"He is so charming!"
"He is so rich!"
"He needs a wife..."
Le sorellastre passarono giorni e giorni a prepararsi per il ballo. Comprarono vestiti nuovi, scarpe nuove e borse nuove. Il giorno del ballo Cenerentola le aiutò a vestirsi e ad acconciarsi i capelli.
The stepsisters spent days and days preparing for the ball. They bought new dresses, new shoes, and new handbags. On the day of the ball, Cinderella helped them to dress and to style their hair.
“Oh, ho un’idea fantastica!” esclamò la sorellastra minore. “Cenerentola, vieni al ballo con noi! Sarà più divertente se ci sei anche tu!”
"Oh, I have a wonderful idea!" exclaimed the younger stepsister. "Cinderella, come to the ball with us! It will be more amusing if you are also there!"
“Oh, ma non hai niente da metterti…” rise la sorellastra maggiore. “Non puoi mica andare dal principe con addosso i tuoi vecchi stracci sporchi. Che peccato. Magari la prossima volta.”
"Oh, but you don't have anything to wear…(put on)" laughed the older stepsister. "You can’t meet the prince wearing your old, dirty rags. What a shame. Maybe next time.”
Cenerentola trattenne a stento le lacrime. Finì di vestire le sorelle e andò al piano di sotto in cucina. Si mise al camino e sospirò.
“Le cose andranno meglio in futuro…” disse al gatto.
“Miao…” rispose il gatto.
Cinderella barely held back her tears. She finished dressing her sisters and then went down to the kitchen (went to the floor below in the kitchen). She sat beside the fire and sighed.
"Things will get better one day... (will go better in future)," she told the cat.
"Meow…" replied the cat.
Proprio allora ci fu un bagliore e una vecchia signora apparse in un angolo della cucina.
“Chi… chi è lei?” balbettò Cenerentola.
“Sono la tua fata madrina,” disse la vecchia signora. “Sei un’orfana e tutti gli orfani hanno una fata madrina.”
Just then, there was a flash of light, and an old lady appeared in a corner of the kitchen.
"Who… who are you?" stammered Cinderella.
"I am your fairy godmother” said the old lady. "You are an orphan, and all orphans have a fairy godmother."
La fata madrina accarezzò il gatto.
“Questo gatto mi ha detto quanto sei buona. E di come speri sempre in un futuro migliore. Quel futuro è arrivato, Cenerentola. Andrai al ballo del re. Portami una zucca!”
The fairy godmother patted the cat.
"This cat tells me how kind you are. And how you always wish for a better future. That future has arrived, Cinderella. You will go to the king's ball. Bring me a pumpkin!"
Cenerentola corse nell’orto e prese una grande zucca arancione. La fata madrina toccò la zucca con la sua bacchetta magica e quella si trasformò in una carrozza dorata.
Cinderella ran into the garden and picked a big, orange pumpkin. The fairy godmother touched the pumpkin with her magic wand and it turned itself into a golden carriage.
“Venite qui topolini!” disse ai topolini nel muro. Agitò di nuovo la bacchetta e i topolini si trasformarono in sei bellissimi cavalli per tirare la carrozza.
"Come here, little mice!" she said to the mice in the wall. She again waved her wand, and the mice turned themselves into six beautiful horses to pull the carriage.
“Ma non ho il vestito!” disse Cenerentola.
“Ferma immobile,” disse la fata madrina. Agitò di nuovo la bacchetta e i vestiti sporchi di Cenerentola si trasformarono in uno splendido vestito argentato. E ai piedi di Cenerentola apparvero due bellissime scarpette di cristallo.
"But I don't have a dress!" said Cinderella.
"Stand still," said the fairy godmother. She again waved her wand, and Cinderella's dirty clothes turned into a spectacular silver dress. And on Cinderella's feet appeared two beautiful glass shoes.
“Adesso vai al ballo!” disse la fata madrina. “Ma torna a casa entro mezzanotte! Quando l’orologio suonerà le dodici, il tuo vestito ridiventerà di stracci e la tua carrozza ridiventerà una zucca.
... Divertiti!”
"Now go to the ball!" said the fairy godmother. "But return home by midnight! When the clock strikes twelve, your dress will turn back into rags, and your carriage will turn back into a pumpkin.
... Have fun!"
E con un altro bagliore, la fata madrina sparì.
“Andrò al ballo!” disse Cenerentola.
“Miao…” disse il gatto.
And with another flash of light, the fairy godmother disappeared.
"I'm going to the ball!" said Cinderella.
"Meow…" said the cat.
Al ballo del re il principe era molto annoiato.
Era sicuro di aver danzato con tutte le giovani damigelle del regno. Tutte indossavano vestiti bellissimi, ma nessuna di loro era interessante. Nessuna di loro capiva le sue barzellette.
At the king’s ball, the prince was very bored.
He was sure he had danced with every young lady in the kingdom. All of them wore beautiful dresses, but none of them were interesting. None of them understood his jokes.
Il principe aveva appena finito di ballare con una delle sorellastre di Cenerentola quando sulla sala scese il silenzio. Tutti si girarono a guardare mentre una bellissima giovane varcava la soglia.
The prince had just finished dancing with one of Cinderella's stepsisters when the room fell silent. Everybody turned to look as the most beautiful young woman* walked through the door.
* You wouldn't say "young woman" in Italian. Instead you'd say"la giovane / una giovane" (the young person), and use the feminine article in front (la/una) to indicate that she is female. A "young man" would be il giovane / un giovane.
Aveva lunghi capelli rossi e gli occhi verdi. Aveva un vestito argentato. Aveva delle scarpe brillanti, come fatte di cristallo. Era Cenerentola, ma nessuno la riconobbe. Nemme no la sua matrigna e le sorellastre!
She had long red hair and green eyes. She wore a silver dress. Her shoes sparkled, as though made of glass. It was Cinderella, but nobody recognised her. Not even her stepmother and stepsisters!
Il principe restò a bocca aperta. Non aveva mai visto una donna bella come Cenerentola. Le chiese di ballare. Ballarono insieme per tutta la sera. Il principe trovava Cenerentola bella, ma anche buona, sveglia e divertente. Rideva alle sue barzellette e lui rideva a quelle di lei.
The prince's mouth dropped open (remained open mouthed). He had never seen a woman as beautiful as Cinderella. He asked her to dance. They danced together the whole evening. The prince found Cinderella beautiful, but also kind, clever and funny. She laughed at his jokes, and he laughed at hers.
Cenerentola si divertiva così tanto che non si accorse che si era fatto tardi. L’orologio cominciò a rintoccare la mezzanotte. Don… don… don…
Cinderella was having so much fun that she didn't notice that it had become late. The clock began to chime midnight.
Dong… dong… dong…
“Oh no! Devo andare!” esclamò Cenerentola e corse via dalla sala da ballo.
“Non andare! Non so nemmeno come ti chiami!” gridò il principe. Ma Cenerentola era già andata via.
"Oh no! I have to leave!" exclaimed Cinderella, and she ran out of the ballroom.
"Don't go! I don't even know your name! (how you're called)" shouted the prince. But Cinderella was already gone.
Cenerentola corse via dal palazzo così in fretta che perse una delle sue scarpette di cristallo per le scale.
Quando arrivò in fondo alle scale - DON! - l’orologio suonò l’ultimo rintocco.
Cinderella fled from the palace so fast that she lost one of her glass shoes on the stairs.
When she arrived at the bottom of the stairs — DONG! — The clock rung the last chime.
Il bellissimo vestito di Cenerentola ridiventò di stracci e la sua carrozza dorata ridiventò una zucca.
“Accidenti!” disse Cenerentola.
Cinderella's beautiful dress turned back into rags, and her golden carriage turned back into a pumpkin.
"Drat," said Cinderella.
Proprio in quel momento vide il principe correre verso di lei, con in mano la sua scarpetta di cristallo. Non voleva esser vista vestita con quei vecchi stracci. Si vergognava, ma non sapeva dove nascondersi!
Just at this moment, she saw the prince running towards her, with her glass shoe in his hand. She did not want to be seen dressed in her dirty old rags. She was ashamed, but did not know where to hide!
“Mi scusi signorina,” ansimò lui. “Ha visto dov'è andata quella bellissima ragazza? Questa scarpa è sua! Devo trovarla!”
Il principe non aveva riconosciuto Cenerentola senza i suoi bei vestiti!
"Excuse me, miss," he said, panting. "Did you see where that beautiful girl went? This shoe is hers! I must find her!"
The prince had not recognised Cinderella without her beautiful clothes!
Cenerentola fece di no con la testa. Il principe riprese la corsa per continuare la ricerca. Cenerentola tornò a piedi fino a casa.
Cinderella shook her head (made "no" with her head). The prince ran off again (restarted the run) to continue the search. Cinderella walked all the way home (returned home on foot).
Passarono tre settimane. Il principe non riusciva a dormire. Non riusciva a smettere di pensare alla bellissima donna del ballo. Aspettò il suo ritorno al palazzo, ma lei non ritornò. Aspettò l’arrivo di una lettera, ma nessuna lettera arrivò.
Three weeks passed. The prince wasn't able to sleep. He was not able to stop thinking about the beautiful woman at the ball. He awaited her return to the palace, but she did not return. He awaited the arrival of a letter, but no letters came.
Alla fine, preso dalla disperazione, diede la scarpetta di cristallo a un fidato messaggero e gli ordinò di fare visita a tutte le famiglie del regno.
“Trova la proprietaria di questa scarpetta e portala da me!”
Finally, taken by desperation, he gave the glass shoe to a loyal messenger and ordered him to visit every household in the kingdom.*
"Find the owner of this shoe, and bring her to me!"
* Literally "every family". Italian speakers visit people, not houses. You would not say that you visited every "house" in the kingdom.
Il messaggero fece visita a centinaia di famiglie. Ogni volta, le ragazze della casa dicevano che la scarpetta apparteneva a loro. Ma quando se la provavano, il piede era troppo lungo, o piccolo o largo.
The messenger visited hundreds of households. Every time, the girls in the house claimed the shoe belonged to them. But when they tried it on, their feet were too long, or small, or wide.
Alla fine, il messaggero arrivò a casa di Cenerentola. La matrigna di Cenerentola andò ad aprire la porta.
“Certo! Certo! Si accomodi!”
Portò il messaggero nella sala da pranzo, dove le due sorellastre erano in attesa.
Finally, the messenger arrived at Cinderella's house. Cinderella’s stepmother went to open the door.
"Of course! Of course! Come in!”*
She led the messenger into the dining room, where the two stepsisters were waiting.
* Si accomodi = A polite way to say "come in" or "please sit". Literally "make yourself comfortable".
La sorella maggiore disse “Grazie al cielo! La mia scarpa!” Ma quando se la provò, il piede era troppo largo.
La sorella minore disse “Che sciocchina… Non è la tua scarpa, è la mia!” Ma quando si provò la scarpetta, il piede era troppo piccolo.
The elder sister said "Thank heavens! My shoe!" But when she tried it, her foot was too wide.
The younger sister said "How silly... It's not your shoe, it's mine!" But when she tried the shoe, her foot was too small.
La matrigna disse “Levatevi di mezzo, ragazze, non è la vostra scarpa. è la MIA!” Ma il piede era troppo lungo.
“Oh che sciocca!” disse la matrigna. “La scarpa si sarà ristretta per la pioggia…”
The stepmother said "Get out of the way, girls (literally: remove yourselves from the middle), it's not your shoe. It's MINE!" But her foot was too long.
"Oh how silly!" said the stepmother. "The shoe will have shrunk in the rain..."
Ma il messaggero non si lasciò prendere per il naso.
“Ci sono altre ragazze in casa?” chiese.
“Solo la nostra servetta e di certo la scarpa non è sua…” disse la matrigna.
But the messenger was not so easily fooled. (Literally: "would not let himself be taken by the nose — a common expression)
"Are there any other women in this house?" he asked.
"Only our servant girl, and for certain the shoe is not hers... " said the stepmother.
“Portatela immediatamente qui. Tutte le ragazze del regno devono provare la scarpetta,” insistette il messaggero.
"Fetch her immediately. All the girls in the kingdom must try the shoe," insisted the messenger.
Quando Cenerentola arrivò nella sala da pranzo aveva indosso i suoi soliti stracci e il viso tutto sporco.
Mise il piede sporco nella scarpetta di cristallo e… incredibile! Non era troppo largo. Non era troppo lungo. Calzava a pennello!
When Cinderella arrived in the dining room she was in her usual rags, and her face was covered in dirt.
She put her dirty foot into the glass shoe and… amazing! It wasn't too wide. It wasn't too long. It fit perfectly! (literally: like a paintbrush — a common expression)
Disse piano, “è la mia scarpa.”
“La prego venga con me,” disse il messaggero. E prima di essere fermato dalla matrigna e dalle sorellastre, il messaggero trascinò Cenerentola fuori dalla porta e su nella carrozza.
She said quietly, "It's my shoe."
"Please come with me," said the messenger. And before the stepmother and stepsisters could stop them, the messenger ushered Cinderella out the door and into a carriage.
Cenerentola fu condotta a palazzo dal principe. Aveva sempre il suo vecchio vestito sporco ed aveva fuliggine sulle braccia, le gambe e il viso. Si vergognava così tanto che non alzava gli occhi dal pavimento.
Cinderella was taken to the palace to meet the prince. She was still wearing her dirty old dress, and she had soot all over her arms, legs and face. She was so ashamed that she didn't lift her eyes from the floor.
Il principe le prese la mano.
“Signorina la prego mi guardi,” chiese con gentilezza. E quando lei alzò lo sguardo e lui vide i suoi occhi verdi e buoni, seppe subito che era la donna della quale si era innamorato al ballo.
The prince took her hand.
"Miss, please, look at me," he asked gently. And when she lifted her gaze and he saw her kind, green eyes, he knew immediately that she was the woman he had fallen in love with at the ball.
Si sposarono la primavera seguente e passarono il resto delle loro vite a ridere l’uno delle barzellette dell’altra.
They married the next spring, and spent the rest of their lives laughing at each other's jokes.
