Había una vez tres chivitos. Vivían en las montañas en una pequeña aldea de cabras llamada Villacabras.
Once upon a time there were three billy goats. (Literally: There was one time three little goats.) They lived in the mountains in a little goat-village called Goatstown.
Los tres chivitos eran hermanos, pero eran muy distintos. El hermano más joven era el más pequeño, el hermano mediano era el más gordito, y el hermano mayor era el más fuerte.
The three goats were brothers, but they were very different. The youngest brother was the smallest, the middle brother was the fattest, and the oldest brother was the strongest.
Como ustedes probablemente saben, las cabras comen hierba todo el tiempo. Hierba para el desayuno. Hierba para el almuerzo. Hierba para la cena. (Algunas veces comen pastel de chocolate como postre, pero por lo general, tan sólo comen más hierba).
As you probably know, goats eat grass all the time. Grass for breakfast. Grass for lunch. Grass for dinner. (Sometimes they eat chocolate cake for dessert, but usually they just eat more grass.)
Durante el verano, había un montón de hierba alta y verde en Villacabras. Pero en el invierno, las montañas estaban cubiertas con nieve profunda, y no había hierba en ningún lugar.
During the summer, there was a lot of tall, green grass in Goatstown. But in the winter, the mountains were covered in deep snow, and there was no grass anywhere.
De modo que los tres chivitos decidieron bajar la montaña y encontrar la hierba alta y verde del prado al otro lado del pueblo.
So the three goats decided to go down the mountain and find the tall, green grass in the meadow on the other side of town.
Ellos cruzaron la carretera (taca-taca, taca-taca),
... a través de la aldea (taca-taca, taca-taca),
… y cruzando el estanque (paf, zas, paf, zas),
… hasta que llegaron a un puente largo.
They went across the road (clip clop, clip clop),
... through the village (clip clop, clip clop),
… and across the pond (splish, splash, splish, splash),
… until they arrived at a long bridge.
Al otro lado del puente estaba la hierba más alta y más verde que los chivitos habían visto alguna vez. Ellos pisaban fuerte con sus pies y meneaban sus colas. ¡Ñam, ñam! ¡Hierba!
On the other side of the bridge was the tallest, greenest grass that the goats had ever seen. They stomped their feet and wiggled their tails. Yum, yum! Grass!
Pero el puente era muy largo y muy estrecho. Sólo un chivito podía cruzar a la vez.
“¡Oigan, chicos, déjenme ir a mí primero!” dijo el chivito más joven. “Yo soy el más pequeño y el más rápido. ¡Yo veré si el puente es seguro!”
But the bridge was very long and very narrow. Only one goat could cross at a time.
"Hey guys, let me go first!" said the youngest goat. "I am the smallest and the fastest. I will see if the bridge is safe!"
“Si eso es lo que deseas”, dijeron los otros chivitos, y el chivito más joven empezó a cruzar el puente.
"If that’s what you want," said the other goats, and the youngest goat began to cross the bridge.
